Frequently Asked Questions
Planning a home renovation, extension, or upgrade in Dunedin or the Otago region?
You're in the right place. Whether this is your first project or your fifth, here are the most common questions we get from homeowners — answered clearly by our team at Next Level Building & Construction.
-
Start by giving us a call. With over 20 years of experience in the building industry, we offer expert advice and guide you through the entire process — from initial design and budgeting to final handover.
-
As early as possible. Involving us during the concept phase allows us to give input on site layout, buildability, material choices, and potential cost-saving opportunities — helping avoid design issues and delays later on.
-
Only an LBP is legally qualified to carry out or supervise restricted building work. Choosing a licensed builder gives you the peace of mind that your project will meet New Zealand’s Building Code standards, and ensures access to trusted contracts and optional Master Build guarantees.
-
Yes — especially for structural work or anything that requires consent. We’ll guide you through what does and doesn’t require a Licensed Building Practitioner and ensure compliance throughout your project.
-
In most cases, yes. Consent is required for:
New buildings and structural alterations
Plumbing and drainage
Wet-area bathrooms
Fireplaces or ventilation systems
Retaining walls over 1.5m
Decks over 1.5m high
Swimming pools and major siteworks
If you’re unsure, we’ll help you figure it out or liaise directly with council on your behalf.
-
We recommend entering into a full, fixed-price building contract. This means you’ll know exactly what’s included and what it will cost before we start. It’s the best way to stay on budget and avoid surprises.
-
Payments are made in stages, aligned with major project milestones like foundations, framing, lock-up, fit-off, and handover. We’ll provide a clear payment and construction schedule before work begins.
Some works may also be undertaken in a charge up manner, or staged progress payments.
-
Absolutely. We encourage input and changes as your ideas evolve. Any changes that affect materials or labour are documented and presented to you as a variation — priced clearly and approved by you before they go ahead.
Still have questions or want to get started?
We’d love to help you bring your ideas to life.
